Darfur Story

Darfur Story

One of the most important reasons for the absence of big support and sympathy from the Islamic world to the Sudan crisis is the ignorance of what is happening in this huge Muslim country, especially in Darfur which has become an important topic of interest in the recent years in the international arena.

We all know the important role of the media in focusing people’s attention towards a certain issue. The western and Zionist media has put more emphasis on the Darfur issue to accomplish certain purposes, such as separating Darfur from Sudan. On the other hand, the Islamic media has done nothing in the past years, which has caused what we see of disorder and imbalance nowadays.

Information is very powerful and we can not understand or resolve the situation in Sudan unless we understand the roots and dimensions of the problem. We can not begin to put solutions before having a huge authenticated database that explains the entire situation with its full extent. This cannot be accomplished by a person or a group; there should be designated sincere institutions and a big number of experts specialized in Sudanese and African affairs. These experts should perform on-site visits, inside analysis, surveys and studies. This requires planning, time and money by free unbiased minds which have no self interest; these minds should be doing this sincerely and solely for the sake of Allah.

We are faced with a very serious problem when analyzing the situation in Darfur. This is due to the uncertainty of the information we have. One confirms something and the other one denies. One is accusing while the other is defending. The involved parties are too many and they keep increasing day after another. All of that makes the situation even more complex, especially these days, when we read tens and hundreds of analyses and names whose history or credibility we know nothing about. Some are wise and mature, some are Zionist’s agents and some are knowledgeable hypocrites.

Darfur MapDarfur is one of the largest Sudanese territories located in west Sudan, about half a million square kilometers, its population is about six million and the majority are Sunni Muslims. Some statistics show that up to 50% have memorized the entire Quran which reflects the adherence of the population to Islam. I think 50% is an exaggeration, however, but it shows the Islamic nature of the people. That may be why the West and Zionists have so much interest in this territory.

Some movements arose in the nineties of the twentieth century calling for independency from Sudan. Then it developed into a military movement in 2003 and the problems worsened until it became an international issue: should Darfur be included or independent from Sudan?

To answers this question, we need an unbiased analysis of the history, politics, religious background and the reality of the situation in Darfur in order to find a practical solution for the problem. Whoever studies the crisis of Darfur finds it very likely that Darfur will become independent of Sudan, unless the Sudanese government takes serious and well planned measures. Muslims all over the world should get proactive before the separation occurs and reconciliation chance is gone. We are all inactive and think that Allah will preserve the Islamic nation even if we do not do anything. Some of us think that this issue will resolve itself over time, and that is wrong. Let’s not forget what happened to Andalusia and India. We need to admit that this is very serious and the chance that Darfur becomes independent is big. I say this for the following reasons:

First: Darfur is larger than many countries; western analytics say that it is as big as France to give the impression that it can be a country by itself. Darfur has great natural resources such as oil and uranium.

Second: The complex geographic location of Darfur, Darfur shares open borders and economical, political and familial relationship with Libya and Chad. This gives these countries an important role since it makes it vital for them to play an active role in the conflict of Darfur.

Third: The ethnic background of the tribes of Darfur is very concerning. Even though the whole population is Muslim, 80% belong to non-Arab African tribes and most of them are farmers. The rest are Arab tribes who migrated to Darfur in the nineteenth century and most of them are shepherds. Both groups are Muslims but they have different backgrounds and ethnicities. This has caused disagreement between them, which is natural and rather expected. This should not be surprising as the Muhajireen and Ansar had such disagreements as well, so did the Aws and Khazraj tribes. If these conflicts are not properly dealt with, the disagreements will get more complicated and security in the region will be compromised. This may push the people towards an alternative solution of seeking independent powerful government that controls both groups. In addition, the desert nature of the land and lack of pastures puts the tribes in a struggle for water resources and grassland.

Fourth: The history of Darfur makes its division a very concerning matter. For the most part of history, the region has been actually independent from Sudan. In fact, it used to be a Muslim Sultanate encompassing a large number of African tribes. The last Sultan was Al-Wareh Ali bin Dinar, who ruled from 1898 to 1917. He used to send the cover of the Ka’ba to Makkah for twenty years. He used to feed the pilgrims to the point where they named a place close to Madinah after him. This Muslim Sultan supported the Ottoman Caliphate in World War I, causing the rage of the British authorities that occupied Sudan at that time. Therefore, the British joined Darfur to Sudan in 1917. This historical background shows that if the residents don’t feel comfortable with the Sudanese government, they will want to go back to what they had been before.

Abdul Wahid Muhammad Nur

 Abdul Wahid Muhammad Nur

Fifth: The heavy Western Zionist interference in the region is pushing towards the idea of division in order to achieve huge strategic advantages. In fact, it has been openly cooperating with the rebel leaders in Darfur to push them to divide the land in order to have a new government that supports the helping Western and Zionist powers. The country that cares the most about Darfur is France. This is because Darfur is on the farthest eastern border of the land that used to be occupied by France. In fact, France has been able to associate with an important figure from the tribe of Fur, one of the biggest tribes in Darfur and after which the region was named (Dar-Fur). This figure is Abdul Wahid Muhammad Nur, who holds clear secular French views. He is the founder of the biggest rebel movement in Darfur known as the Sudan Liberation Army. This is a different movement than Sudan People’s Liberation Army which is based in Southern Sudan, though their ideology is very similar and there has been lots of cooperation between the two.

Khalil Ibrahim

Khalil Ibrahim

The British also interfere in the region through Khalil Ibrahim, who has founded a rebel movement that belongs to Zaghawa, another African tribe. With the support of the British, he formed the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), which also is a secular movement that calls for separating Darfur from Sudan.

Besides France and England, there is the US, which not only has interest in Darfur, Sudan, or even the African region, but in the whole world! The US has been pushing for international forces under UN authority and the US government to keep peace in the region. And then comes Israel to take part in the Darfur issue, not just through the Save Darfur alliance, but also through direct interference by the Israeli government itself. The Israeli government has collected $5,000,000 to support the Darfurian refugees, gave permission to Israeli charity organizations to help and offered to buy $800,000-worth of water purification materials donated by Israeli companies. Also, Tzipi Livni, the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs declared at a meeting with some African ambassadors in Tel Aviv that the Israeli government would try to find a solution to the crisis in Darfur!

In addition, one cannot forget about the many humanitarian organizations that practice humanitarian acts as well as missionary acts and criminal acts! For example, charity l’Arche de Zoé kidnapped children from Darfur to sell them to English and French families in Oct 2007.

Sixth:For years the Sudanese government considered Darfur as a desert territory populated by Bedouin tribes with no natural resources, therefore unimportant. This was a severe administrative and ideological mistake that led to poverty, isolation, and absence of security, infrastructure and parliament representation. Due to this, the people of Darfur lost loyalty to Sudan. Even when Omar Al-Bashir took over in 1989, the devastating war in southern Sudan did not allow him to look after the Darfur issues. This further deteriorated the relationship between the people of Darfur and Sudan and gave rise to disobedient movements. Whenever reconciliation efforts are attempted, the problem is postponed rather than solved. So things calm down for a while and then get even worse than they were.

The Janjaweed

The  Janjaweed

Seventh:The Sudanese military consists of only about 90 thousand soldiers. The fact that it has been weakened through the 20-year war in southern Sudan made it unable to control and provide security to the large Sudan, especially Darfur where the Janjaweed gang appeared. The Janjaweed comprise armed Arabic tribes who ride horses and wear white garments. They wander throughout Darfur killing and robbing people. The West claims that the Janjaweed are cooperating with the Sudanese government, who in turn denies such allegations. If it is true that the government cooperates with the Janjaweed, then that reflects the weakness of the Sudanese military forces since they can’t control things themselves and therefore need assistance of robbers and criminals! If the government is not cooperating then that is a sign of weakness as well because the government declared that it had no control over the Janjaweed and that they were killing Sudanese soldiers as well as the rebels. This all shows the instability and insecurity of the area.

Eighth: The ignorance and illiteracy of the people of

Darfur make it easy for others to control their mind. Although a lot of them have memorized the Quran, the school system is very weak and there is a complete lack of media. With the absence of sincere Muslim scholars and teachers, these uneducated people become easy targets by the Zionists and Western missionaries who are pushing ideas like separation of religion from the state, imposing secular curriculums and independence from Sudan.

Ninth: There is an absence of authentic and scientific studies that explain the history, geography, topographical complexity of the area. There is a lack of research on how to deal with the different tribes, their ideology and their beliefs. Therefore, whoever tries to solve the problem and bring the groups together fails even if he were very sincere.

Tenth: The disgraceful complete disregard of the Darfur issue by the Islamic world. The situation in Darfur has been worsening over the past 10 years and Sudan is left alone with absolutely no support by the Islamic world. This makes it almost given that the independence of Darfur is going to take place. When that happens, feeling sorry and crying over spilled milk will not do anything.

The above are ten factors and there are much more but the important point is that the likelihood of the separation of Darfur from Sudan is very high.

We did not mention all the above to say that there is no hope or solution to the problem and we completely do not agree with the International Criminal Court, yet we strive to resolve this issue and request the Sudanese government with all possible sincerity and transparency to reconsider the Darfur case and find a logical and acceptable solution in light of the above circumstances and other circumstances that we do not know.

This issue is very serious, yet resolving it is not impossible if the right means and measures are taking. Keeping Darfur under the Sudan ruling is a national duty and an Islamic obligation.

We ask our dear readers to share their thoughts about possible solutions and reconciliation strategies which will be the topic next week with Allah’s will.

We ask Allah to help and guide us, and to protect Sudan and the people of Sudan.

We ask Allah to honor Islam and the Muslims.

Dr. Ragheb Elsergany

According to the gratitude and the stand of the issue, the both parties have fail to recognise themselves dispite the fact that they are all muslems communities.i think the clue is the separation aspect of leting Darfur remind on the south yet they are meant to be together has anoitted them increasing tension and massive killing in the Darfur region.
Its not easy solving Darfur issues due to your samplity take, what have happened in it i do not think will never be forgeted unless there is complete rights are given to those whom influenced this is if or propuse only.because both African and none africans are effected by Government policy.so when you take about peace in Darfor, you have to think of the two parts

its Dr. tarig from Graida- Buram- Sudan
Most of the conflicts in Africa are based on seff ends and consequenses are: these who cause such conflicts benefit less, cause more harm to thier brothers, sisters, relatives and their fellow africans in general.this too attract others who come as if they want to solve the problem and end up financing it.better to share equally than lsing totally
WE MUST STEPDOWN AND GIVE THE DARFURIAN TO BE THE SECOND VICE PRESIDENT OF THE SUDAN TO MAKE HAVE CONFIDENT IN US
we only need peace in our country ,and go back to our people so that we should live in peace and unity
I hope in darfur for peace establishment.....
garang majer- i just wante to understand who is responsible with firing house , killing the peopole and whate is the really number if our government reject the non-government organizations reports concerning the situation there?i wante darfour conplict to reslove soon by taking the government out from the ncp and their lier man called osman kheber out from darfour.
there is no outsiders that can profer genuie and sincere solutions to Darfur crisis like they themselves. therefore they should look inward for solutions. Pleople may forget, but history will not forget and forgive all our african leaders who have for their selfish reasons promote and sponsor crisis in africa.

Hello I'm Tyrone. I feel that the issue in Darfur is another international crisis that has further developed and continue to develop the insticual fears of humans. This type of killing that is motivating indiviudals to kill for somethign that is not clear nor towards their instinual service is causing a mass psychosis of the health of the state and the poeple who do in fact choose to serve it. It seems that rather than have proper motivation, our motivation is beign based on the drive to be alive and that agresive instincts are being nurtured and suppourted through an event such as this. What is the value of a kill if we no not only what we kill or, but why we kill for.
Thanks to Dr Ragheb for a informative write up. People of Darfur should not echo with the aim and mission of western, Israel or the USA. They should look for their own aim and mission. Government of Sudan should help them in this regards. Being Bangladeshi, I saw the root level people are so good, polite and amiable, if they are motivated with good spirit, they can make the country (Sudan) as one of the best in Africa.
musilems in the woeld are not taking enough care about what is runing in Darfur.SO,PLEASE MORE ATTENTION TO YOUR BROTHERS IN THAT REGION.
We must stop the WAR to reduce suffring our public
i am here to challenge ncp of what they are doing

in sudan is actually awful and bitterly against the

black people(africans) in sudan.
I want to send my regards for all darfur people and I hope that the problems will solve soon ,we must stop the war because we want to reach the world

thanks for all
darfur region have all the qualities to be a region, i appeal to sudan government, united nation and african union to sit togather and look in to it.
it seem still very superficial poit ofview feeding certain people in such that the Western like to reapoff the Sudanenes Goods and wealths.but reallly the task is abovethat and going over and over.that is only way to enlude from real problem and open chance to roques to corrept .beneficaries to loiter and DarFurian to still live in Scourge and then to forget invevitable issue
we know that corruption is key.ANYBODY with a gun can be a tough guy.I WISH WITH ALL MY BEING THAT SOMEONE WOULD HEAR ME OUT ,AND GIVE ME A CHANCE TO PUT INTO ACTION WHAT ALLAH HAS TRULY SHOWN ME.

PRAISE THE ONE TRUE GOD...ALLAH
Dear ALL, In lines with Darfurian issue, I think before they seek for total peace they need to foregive each other's as brothers and sisters by ironing the differences among them. Remember what happen in Iraq inregards to their wealths. Western Countries always survives on Africans Wealths that is well known everywhere. So, let's watch out before we act!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this topic shout be conciderd on all details about darfour
I want to come in darfur for peace establishment
Thank you Dr Ragheb for a most informative piece. It is most important that people decide based on reliable information. It seems that the leaders and people of Darfur and other parts of Sudan will have to iron out issues among themselves first. If the will to compromise and achieve peace is there among them, maybe others can help.
The issue of Darfur crisis has to do with the Arab muslims around the world that are supporting the Sudanese Arab government against the Black Sudanese muslim people of Darfur. For me its a shame that the muslim world has not done anything to resolve the Darfur crisis. The Koran is against muslims killing fellow muslims. All the muslim world attention is diverted to the Palestinian people. But they have forgotten that muslim are commiting genocide against their fellow muslims in Darfur. Even the Christian laugh at us.
The best thing we can do if we are very far away we should pray for all this people.Thank you
okambo u are
I think Sudan government should not allow foreign parties especially western countries to interfere to this matter, this is to my understanding totally internal problem,

Actual situation here is that western world want to unstable Sudan and reapoff its natural resouces/wealth, this is what Westerners do for living. INGOs and NGOs will execute westerners plans slowly. SUDAN NEED A STRONG LEADER AND FULLEST BACKING BY THE PEOPLE. Study Sri Lanka's vitory against Terrorists.
according to what happened last month( May)in North West North Dar Fur between sudan Government and JE movement seemed that things aren't what they seem. you can see the truth of Matters with your Eyes.killing, destroying rifle and so displacement and refugees in civilians this while we were in waiting to listen good news from Quatar.but unfortunately things came negatively resulted. I donot know they are doing the things like that .in my point of view peace Negation is over any activites
YOU seem to be talking about Mulims point of view

since you did not mention anything related to what efforts done by others ,killing of inocent supported by some Arab counters.though ican not deny the efforts you did in writing this article.
since the beginning of2003 and darFur disaster passed through different phases.without decisive initiativet to end the task. all are became like audiences watching DarFur violentflims screen.day after day the situation move from worse to worset.the situation demonated by rogues scouring upon their interest unmorally with superficial thinks.butare inexcusable loathe every wise.IDPs still scouring in how to get foods after they stoppled completely in the comps became like beggars.the conflict have been like undiagnosed disease. bitty idears .different s peace signed , tens of movements some are armed some others nonarmed but the consequance is one .on going of conflicts and Human Disaster.
Its seem that DarFurian youth lost their inheritance value and Hospitality .the war inherited newvalues on them.you can see how they use unligitimatic way to satisfy theirbankruptacy need.hijacking, looting ,raping some are clients againstDarFur Issue.some are pretendind Rebelions join fabricated peace Negotation to sign on any peace Negotation form less of any context or Aim the purpose personal interest and the outcome to longitude the disaster

,conflict and Suffering of Children and old people.the fiction in this Situation .the difficulties of establish settled situation without unified Idears.

the fact is that every look the task according to his benefits along his personal vision
according to what mentioned above to us rights to aware Muslim about DarFur problems and they have to help us in equal solution in very near time .because the situation on going open chances to others to practice more and more against Sudan unity so we calling on near solution the problem.

its seem that DarFurain are suffered more at that phenomena and need urgent end the conflict

we hope the Government and Rebels to put their hands together to give peace in DarFur they must renounce their personal benefits
absence of big support and sympathy from the Islamic world to the Sudan crisis is the ignorance "quote"

I don't agree with the above quote, it is well known that islamic public opinion is dominated by Arab countries. The Arabs are well-known of their race discrimination, no sympathy to Darfur, because they are not ARABS.Compare reaction to Gaza
I am a Christian, just learning about Darfur. Many concerned people have a sense of hopelessness. My thoughts so far is that we should take judgement out of it, just try to protect, educate, and provide for the people. The people will need emotional support also to heal and move on. It does seem that this is one case where the international community should coordinate a response to move in, but let's avoid Iraq like disasters with planning and leadership by people who understand the culture. What do you think?

Regardless of causes, roots or the implications of Darfur Conflict, the plight of its Moslem people remains in its very core the moral responsibilty of all Sudanese people first, and then the other Arab, and Moslem parties who had demonstrated till now a very week response to the humanitarian situation that is worsening day-by-day in region. On contrary, we found the presence of western organizations is taking the lead in every issue pertaining to the overall spectrum of Darfur crisis, in a way that make me asking myself every day, We are Arabs, Moslems what sort of qualities, values and legacy we claim that it is our mission to transmit to other people?!

Mohamed Hassan Abdulla,

Darfur Local NGOs Network,
Raghed,

excellent piece of research which I enjoyed reading. I am in Nyala Coodinating beween the Military, Police and Humanitarians.

It is ascencier endeavour to wards Sudan that is highly appreciated.Dialogue Bettween Darfur
In my opinion this story should be circulated to the on-going conference, held in Qatar, addressing all the countries heads participating.
LET GIVE PEACE A CHANCE WITH NO SEPARATING
it became clear that there is some behind why Sudanese regiems not like to arrest a warrant to albashir every oneget sure that there are gelty mind and action in Dar Fur committd by some one under the protection of top facilitators in the system
Im only 16 years old but i dont like the fact that no one is helping you out. It makes me mad to see that instead of helping you people are just finding ways to take Darfur over. I'm sorry i cant help in any ways
As per political, economic, culture. mixed religion of the peoples and geographical map of the country. this people should better have their own independent despite its Islamic obligation that seem conservative to outsides world social attitude to the Islamic religion.
Nelson B. Dak
try as much as poss and give them their rights, and pay more attention to them.enclude them into d sudanese govt
